Export Potentials from Assam: A Comprehensive Overview
Assam, located in the North East Region (NER) of India, is the largest economy in the region and serves as a gateway to North East India and some neighboring countries. The state’s economy has been growing steadily in recent years, but it lags behind other northeastern states and the national average in per capita GSDP. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of Assam’s export potential by analyzing its current export status, identifying sectors with high export potential, and suggesting measures for strengthening export infrastructure and connectivity.
Assam’s Current Export Status
Assam’s merchandise exports in 2021-22 stood at US450.4 million, which is an 8.4% increase compared to 2020-21. However, the state’s export basket is highly concentrated, with tea being the most important export item taking up half the share in total exports. Other major export items include petroleum products, jute products, and agricultural products. Despite this growth, the current level of exports from Assam is relatively low, and the state has significant untapped export potential.
Sectors with High Export Potential
The study identifies 15 product categories with high export potential, including textiles, handicrafts, organic products, processed foods, spices, and essential oils. These sectors have the potential to generate significant foreign exchange earnings and employment opportunities for the state. To realize this potential, the state needs to focus on improving the quality of its products, enhancing productivity, and adopting international standards and certifications.
